Premier Cho Jung-tai on Wednesday received a visiting delegation led by Kono Taro, a member of Japan's House of Representatives and former Minister for Foreign Affairs. The premier said that Taiwan and Japan have always provided mutual support and assistance to each other during their times of greatest need, and are currently cooperating in several areas including regional peace, economic security, and science and technology. He emphasized that both sides share the common goal of promoting peaceful development throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
Premier Cho pointed out that innovation and development in the field of AI technology is among these areas of bilateral cooperation. The Executive Yuan is planning 10 major AI projects, while the National Center for High-performance Computing under the National Institutes of Applied Research has officially announced a collaboration with Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom and Japan's NTT to develop All-Photonics Network (APN) infrastructure. APNs are expected to substantially reduce energy consumption and enable higher-speed data transmission, the premier said, which is certain to have an enormous impact on the development of AI technologies worldwide.
Premier Cho further highlighted that Japan is Taiwan's third-largest trading partner, while Taiwan is Japan's fourth-largest, with bilateral trade surpassing US$76.7 billion as of the end of November this year. He expressed hope that all Japanese legislators in the delegation will continue to promote Taiwan-Japan cooperation, particularly through digital technology exchanges in fields such as AI, data technologies, robotics and unmanned vehicles.
In his remarks, Representative Kono said that visitor arrivals from Taiwan to Japan exceeded 6 million in 2024, and that arrivals for January to November 2025 have already surpassed that total. He also pointed out that Taiwan's investment in Japan last year stood in excess of US$5 billion. All of these figures represent record highs. In addition, Representative Kono expressed confidence that economic ties between the two sides will continue to deepen, pointing out that Taiwan and Japan have signed a digital trade agreement and memorandums of understanding (MOUs) on regional customs cooperation, while Taiwan has also lifted restrictions on food imports from five Japanese prefectures affected by the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster.
