Minister of Economic Affairs Kung Ming-hsin led a delegation to Czechia Dec. 7-9, underscoring the government’s commitment to deepening trade ties.
During the three-day visit, Kung met with high-ranking officials, including Senate President Miloš Vystrčil and Senate First Vice-President Jiří Drahoš, for in-depth discussions on current bilateral exchanges and future cooperation and delivered a speech at a business reception, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
In his remarks, Kung noted that Czechia is Taiwan’s largest trade partner in Central and Eastern Europe, with a bilateral trade volume of US$2.37 billion and a yearly growth rate of 94.79 percent. As of October, investment in Czechia by Taiwanese enterprises totaled US$221 million, the eighth-highest Taiwanese investment in an EU country, the minister said, adding that it was concentrated in the information and communication technology sector.
Kung went on to say that direct flights have operated between the two sides since 2021. A total of 11 Czech universities have also collaborated with Taiwan, and 85 Czech students have received scholarships for study or training in Taiwan, he added.
To better respond to global trends, Kung proposed deepening bilateral cooperation in artificial intelligence, drone and space technology, electric vehicles, electron microscopy, and lasers, noting that Taiwanese enterprises producing AI servers such as Hon Hai Technology Group, Inventec Corp. and Wistron Corp. have invested in Czechia, and the Central European country has become the third-largest export market for Taiwan-manufactured unmanned aerial vehicles.
Additionally, Kung paid a visit to the Taiwan Trade and Investment Service Center in Prague, which was launched by the MOEA last year.
