On November 20, 2025, the Ministry of Economic Affairs facilitated the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Trade Promotion Cooperation and a Memorandum of Understanding on Halal Cooperation between Taiwan and Indonesia. These MOUs' objective was to deepen bilateral trade exchanges and halal industrial cooperation, and to assist Taiwanese businesses tap into Indonesia's vast market opportunities. Representative Chen-jung Hung of the Taipei Economic and Trade Office in Indonesia and Representative Arif Sulistiyo of the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office to Taipei signed these MOUs.
The first edition of the MOU on Trade Promotion Cooperation, signed in 2020, expired in 2023. After more than two years of negotiations, the new MOU now includes items such as bird nests, fisheries and seafood products, agricultural products, processed food, bicycles, the shipbuilding industry, housewares, textiles, medical equipment, beauty and healthcare products, handicrafts, animation, comics, and games (ACG), as well as digital services. Future cooperation will include trade fairs and exhibitions, seminars, business forums/dialogues, conferences, training trade fairs, business networking, and capacity building to assist Taiwanese businesses expand into the Indonesian market.
The MOU on Halal Cooperation is the first of its kind ever signed officially by both sides. It includes areas such as mutual recognition of halal certification and enhancing Muslim-friendly environment, through exchanging market information, holding halal business forums and trade activities, aiming to jointly promote halal products and services. It will help Taiwanese businesses better understand the nature of the halal industry and connect with overseas halal markets.
Both MOUs will facilitate the smooth exportation of products from both sides to each other's markets. To implement cooperation under these MOUs, the Taiwanese side will not only continue to hold various trade shows in Taiwan to attract the Indonesian and global buyers, but also plan to participate in trade shows and organize trade promotional activities in Indonesia, thereby creating more business opportunities for both sides.
Indonesia has been ASEAN's largest market and an important trading partner of Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy. The signing of these MOUs will create more platforms for cooperation and exchange between the two sides and promote a mutually beneficial partnership.
