The semiconductor industry is a strategic core for national security and economic growth during global changes. President Lai Ching-te has proposed an initiative to build a trusted global semiconductor partnership. In response, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), and SEMI co-hosted the Semicon Network Summit on September 9, with 20 associations jointly organizing the event.
The summit focused on fostering high-level global dialogue, advancing AI chip collaboration, and expanding talent development, with the goal of building a resilient semiconductor ecosystem. President Lai attended along with 700 participants from 28 countries, including key foreign officials, such as Czech Minister of Science, Research and Innovation Marek Ženíšek, French Senator Olivier Cadic, Polish Secretary of State for Economic Development and Technology Michał Jaros, and Peter Fatelnig, Minister-Counsellor for Digital Economy Policy at the Delegation of the European Union to Japan.
President Lai emphasized Taiwan’s principles of pragmatism, openness, and trust, highlighting Taiwan’s Trade and Investment Centers abroad and the government’s efforts to foster AI infrastructure and international talent networks. He stressed Taiwan’s goal to develop locally while expanding globally with democratic partners in order to build secure and resilient semiconductor supply chains.
At the summit, President Lai awarded Medals of Economic Contribution conferred by the MOEA to Honorary Chairman of the "Semiconductor Strategy Promotion Parliamentarian Alliance" of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party Mr. Akira Amari and TSMC Chairman Dr. C.C. Wei in recognition of their contributions to international cooperation and technological innovation.
Minister of Economic Affairs Kung Ming-Hsin expressed great pleasure in witnessing the award ceremony, praising the recipients for promoting industrial ties between Taiwan and Japan and advancing cutting-edge manufacturing, thereby promoting global AI development.
The summit featured three panel discussions. One was chaired by Minister Kung himself on enhancing trusted cross-border supply chain partnerships to improve supply chain resilience; another was chaired by National Science and Technology Council Minister Wu Cheng-Wen titled Co-Creating the Future of AI Chips; and the third was chaired by ITRI President Edwin Liu on Talent Development for the Semiconductor Industry. These sessions fostered dialogue among leaders in domestic and international industry, academia, and research to advance global cooperation on semiconductors.
The Semicon Network Summit demonstrated Taiwan’s vision as a global semiconductor hub, reinforcing supply chain security and deepening cooperation with key partners. The MOEA will continue to strengthen Taiwan’s role in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
