Japan’s famous retail chain “Don Quijote” is formally opening in Taiwan on January 19, 2021. It held a press conference for opening its first store in Taipei City’s Ximending Shopping District today (18th), and Deputy Mayor Huang Shan-Shan of Taipei City Government and CEO Chang Ming-Pin of InvesTaiwan were invited to attend the press conference. President Mitsuyoshi Takeuchi of Don Quijote Co., Ltd. said that the company is optimistic about Taiwan’s consumer market, and thus chose to open its first store “DON DON DONKI” in Taiwan in Taipei City’s Ximending Shopping District. Besides maintaining the low prices that the company is known for, the store will offer different product discounts based on the needs of Taiwan’s market. Furthermore, the first store was planned with a new element and offers fresh products directly delivered from Japan.
Don Quijote was founded in Tokyo, Japan and best known for its cheap prices. The company currently has 637 stores around the world and has been actively expanding in Asia in recent years, including Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong. Its first store in Taiwan has three floors and is open 24 hours a day. It has recruited nearly 400 Taiwanese employees. Besides creating employment opportunities in Taiwan, the company has also introduced a new business model that will help enhance the competitiveness of Taiwan’s retail service industry.
COVID-19 impacted the world, but Taiwan has kept the outbreak under control, and this allowed foreign companies to successfully implement investment projects in Taiwan. The Ministry of Economic Affairs’ (MOEA) enthusiasm to serve foreign companies has not declined, and actively coordinates with related departments to eliminate barriers, which are created by strict border controls enforced by different countries, for foreign companies. Don Quijote successfully opening a store in Taiwan was made possible by the collective efforts of Taipei City Government, MOEA, Ministry of Labor, and Ministry of the Interior. COVID-19 has not yet subsided, but the MOEA will continue enthusiastically help foreign companies invest in Taiwan, especially the industries in which Taiwan has a competitive advantage.
