The Ministry of Economic Affair's Department of International Cooperation (ICD) and the Industrial Technology Research Institute's Information and Communications Research Laboratories jointly held the "Taiwan-Israel-Netherlands Forum on Smart City Cyber Security" in Taipei City March 27. The aim of the event was to promote cyber security industry and technology exchanges among the three nations.
Speaking at the opening of the ceremony, ICD Director General Cynthia Kiang noted that in recent years, with the increasing prevalence of IoT and mobile technologies and applications, the threat of cyberattack has grown in both scope and scale. In smart cities, in particular, where all sorts of smart installations and applications are potentially vulnerable to hacker attack, the issue of cybersecurity has become one of prime importance.
Among the noted participants in the forum was National Security Council Senior Advisor Der-Tsai Lee, who confirmed that there are ample opportunities for cooperation among Taiwan, Israel and Netherlands in the cybersecurity sector.
Presentations were delivered by Information and Communications Research Laboratories General Director Tzi-Cker Chiueh on the topic of "A White-listing Approach to Tighten the Security of Smart Systems" and Mr. Rick Tam, director at Israeli firm Cyberbit, on "Cyber Resilience Solutions for Smart Buildings-IT/OT Security."
Dr. Sandro Etalle, co-founder of Dutch company SecurityMatters and professor at Eindhoven Technical University, also gave a presentation on the topic of "The Cybersecurity Revolution from IT to Smart Cities," while Mr. Steven Hsu, director at Taiwan's Trend Micro Inc., shared his views on recent international cyber security issues.
Israel is a leader in the cybersecurity sector, with its output accounting for roughly 10% of the global total. It is the world's second-largest exporter of cybersecurity products and services. The Netherlands is also a leader in information technology and is home to Europe's largest cybersecurity cluster, the Hague Security Delta, which has made major strides in information security innovation. Both nations are therefore ideal partners in Taiwan's drive to develop its cybersecurity sector.
In addition to related government officials, representatives of Taiwanese cybersecurity technology companies, industry associations and research institutes also attended the forum, engaging in exchanges and seeking partnerships to achieve win-win outcomes in the field of smart city cybersecurity.
