Due to the impact of the US-China trade war in recent years and the increasing global focus on national security matters (such as current efforts by the US and Japan to promote the reshoring of previously offshored production activities, particularly those in key and strategic industries), the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has been working since last year (2019) to promote the Three Major Programs for Investing in Taiwan, which are designed to encourage offshore Taiwanese businesses to invest once again in Taiwan. In addition, the MOEA is also actively contacting major international manufacturers to increase their presence in Taiwan strengthening tie-ups with members of their supply chains here.
The MOEA Department of Investment Services (DOIS) took part today (7 August) in the August meeting of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Taipei (JCCI). At the meeting, the DOIS made a presentation on "the dangers and opportunities presented by the US-China trade war." Besides declaring its intention to help Japanese firms seize upon opportunities that have arisen amidst the pandemic to build up their global presence, the DOIS also reported on the current state of implementation of the Three Major Programs for Investing in Taiwan. An effort is underway to create future opportunities for cooperation between Taiwanese and Japanese corporations, and more than 100 Japanese members of the JCCI are taking part.
Also, in order to effectively serve the needs of business and industrial firms, InvesTaiwan -- as the MOEA's customized, one-stop investment services authority -- set up a booth at the venue to provide investment advisory services and build a network of contacts via which it can help interested firms to benefit from accelerated investment procedures.
The JCCI has always played an important role in promoting bilateral economic and trade relations between Taiwan and Japan. Today, it continues to attract new investments to Taiwan, and provides Japanese firms with valuable advice on investing and doing business in Taiwan. In the future, the DOIS will continue working to deepen cooperation in a shared effort to help Japanese firms to enjoy smooth success with their investment and business activities in Taiwan.
