“2017 Taiwan-USA Industry Cooperation Mission”, led by Cheng-Wei Yu, Deputy Director General of the Industrial Development Bureau (IDB), has returned from the United States on September 4. This trip has carried out fruitful cooperation and exchanges with Microsoft, Boeing, Micron, Rockwell Automation, Eaton Corporation, the Washington state government, the Idaho state government, Boise State University (BSU) to sign six memorandums of cooperation with TDA (Trade Development Alliance of Greater Seattle), CleanTech Alliance Washington, BSU, and Rockwell Automation. The delegation not only successfully promoted smart machinery, IoT, innovation and commercialization, clean energy, smart manufacturing and talent cultivation of Taiwan to link up with US advanced technologies and innovation industry clusters, but also helped to accelerate strategic cooperation with U.S. industries and to foster these US companies to expand their investment and cooperation in Taiwan.
According to Deputy Director General Yu, the Washington state’s industrial advantage lies in its aerospace industry -- the largest aerospace industrial base in US -- which has more than 1,740 companies. There are also over 14,000 companies in IoT and ICT industries, ranking the state second in entrepreneurship of western US. The delegation also witnessed the signing of memorandums of cooperation between Taiwan’s smart machinery and green energy companies such as NEXCOM International Co., SINBON Electronics Co., GoTech and Taiwan-USA Industrial Cooperation Promotion Office (TUSA) MOEA and two major industrial alliances -- TDA and CleanTech Alliance to promote the growth of industrial links and business opportunities of both sides.
To foster talent cultivation of Taiwan’s smart machinery and manufacturing industry, the delegation also facilitated the signing of memorandums of cooperation between NEXCOM, ITRI, Providence University (PU) and BSU. PU had a “Smart Machinery and Manufacturing Industry Joint Lab” set up in central Taiwan early this year, and BSU is Micron’s key partner and cooperation university in the semiconductor materials, process technology and information management. The signing of cooperation will help enhance Taiwan’s industrial talent cultivation and innovation.
The delegation also successfully led ITRI, Smart Machinery Promotion Office and TUSA MOEA in signing an MOU with Rockwell Automation to utilize Rockwell Automation’s integrated smart manufacturing momentum and major market service into Taiwan’s machinery industry and expand Taiwan’s business opportunities.
Deputy Director General Yu pointed out that through the delegation’s visit to Boeing, it is expected to expand the scope of cooperation between Taiwan’s aviation industry and Boeing in system components, metal and composite components of B777, B787 body structure, and Boeing-Converted Freighter (BCF). By enabling Evergreen Aviation Precision (EGAP) and other aviation manufacturers to introduce a special process technology and certification required for Boeing fuselage sector manufacturing and assembly, and to establish body structure manufacturing supply chain system, it is estimated business opportunities for body structure manufacturing will be increased by about NT$2 billion or more per year. The delegation also visited the headquarters of Microsoft to gain insight into future development and opportunities of forward-looking technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), mixed reality (MR), industrial IoT and intelligent building.
This delegation gained fruitful results in its visits to the United States. MOEA will adhere to the principle of “to build up public platforms for the private to perform,” and follow the government’s five major industrial innovation initiatives to deepen industrial link with Washington state, Idaho state, Ohio state and other industrial clusters, and to promote two-way investment opportunities between Taiwan and the United States for the enhancement of international competitiveness and innovation capability of Taiwan’s industry.
